Ahrefs – what is it? How to use it?

Ahrefs is a platform where you will find many tools useful for the SEO industry.

Among the key tools are:

  • Site Explorer – one of Ahrefs’ primary tools allows a quick look at a domain’s SEO statistics, like: visibility in organic results, inbound links or estimated traffic.
  • Keywords Explorer – in this tool you will find the entire database of keywords that Ahrefs has collected so far, in multiple languages from 189 countries! Each keyword also has different statistics (estimated monthly traffic, SERP history etc.).
  • Site Audit – this is simply an Ahrefs crawler (like Sitebulb or ScreamingFrog) that will allow you to see from your browser what technical condition the site of interest is in. Ahrefs indicates which technical elements need improvement (title, description, headings, internal links, etc.).
  • Content Explorer – with this tool Ahrefs will tell what topics are currently on top. It will suggest interesting topics that will relate to a particular subject niche. This will help your site get more traffic.

How to get Ahrefs for free?

Ahrefs, wanting to help small users, provides a suite of tools called Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for them for free.

To get Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for free, you need to meet only one condition – be the owner of the site to which Ahrefs Webmaster Tools will be assigned or have access to a verified Google Search Console account.

Once you meet the above condition, all you have to do is go to the Ahrefs Webmaster Tools website, where you have to register.

You can verify the ownership of the site manually with the help of a file or with the help of Google Search Console (I recommend the second way :)).

After clicking the “Import” button, Google will display a login panel, after which you must accept the consents for Ahrefs to access Google Search Console data.

And that’s all!

From now on Ahrefs already knows that the sites belong to you, and you can monitor various SEO statistics of your site – such as:

  • Domain Rating,
  • incoming links and referring domains,
  • the keywords for which the site displays in SERP,
  • estimated organic traffic,

Ahrefs also provides a Site Audit tool for free, so you can check what SEO errors are occurring on your site.
